A White Fluffy Start to the New Year!
Last week, a two week old gray seal pup found his way to our center- and he traveled a long distance to get here for life-saving care.
The stranding team at Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket responded to this pup when he was found wandering in the road. At this age, he should still be with his mom, entirely dependent on her for survival. When he was found to be very thin, vocal, and searching for her in a dangerous location, the Nantucket team scooped him up. But, the next challenge was finding a rehab spot for him, and the closest available was at our center. So, they packed him up, escorted him on a ferry, and helped get him all the way to us in Midcoast Maine.
Despite his poor nutritional condition, he was bright, active, and vocal at admit- all positive signs for his rehabilitation. Over the next 1-2 months, he will be receiving around-the-clock care, learning to eat fish and gaining needed weight.
One of the many surprising challenges faced in 2025 was the loss of a regional marine mammal rehab center, leaving MMoME as one of only two facilities along over 6,000 miles of New England coastline, and the only hospital for harbor seal pups. With some scrambling, and support from you, we were able to take in more patients from further away to help offset the loss. This trend continues into 2026 as our very first patient of the year crossed multiple state lines just to get care. Be sure to follow MMoME on social media for more photos and updates!
